Advice

Most of you will have seen home makeover shows on television and often the results are really very good and can be relatively easy to achieve. I know I maybe talking myself out of potential business here but nevertheless… there are a few very basic things that you can do yourself for very little cost at all.

Here are a few ideas:

  • Curb appeal: make sure the front of the house is clean and tidy – it is the first thing a prospective buyer is going to notice. Pick up any litter, mow the lawn, trim the hedge and if you can add a pot or two of flowers all the better.
  • Cleaning: Clean everywhere (if you can) and make sure the whole place is spotless. Put away any washing up and don't leave laundry hanging around. Open the windows and let some fresh air in, and don't try to mask a bad smell with spray, try to find the cause of the odour and wash it, brush it or shampoo it!
  • Tidy up: a tidy home looks more inviting and more spacious but don't just hide things in the cupboard under the stairs… a prospective buyer may open the door and get a shock but also, when you do move, you are going to have to get all that junk back out!
  • Neutralise: Buyers can be put off by a wallpaper or garish paint that might not be to their taste and they may not have the spare cash to start decorating immediately. I know you may be sick of hearing this but, to appeal to most potential buyers, soft muted colours really are often best for the walls and neutral colours for the flooring.
